Why a "liquid" Golden Visa fund can still leave investors with nowhere to go

One investor's 500,000-euro fund came with monthly redemption rights — and a set of terms that made using them nearly impossible.
An investor pursuing Portugal's Golden Visa through a fund put 500,000 euro into a vehicle marketed with monthly redemption rights. On paper that sounded like an exit door: a way to get the money back if plans changed or delays dragged on.
In practice the door barely opened. Redeeming carried a steeply declining fee and a notice period of up to 180 days. The fine print also warned that exiting before the Golden Visa process completed could damage the immigration case itself. The returns were reported as satisfactory. The flexibility was not.
Nothing about that redemption clause counts toward the Golden Visa. The capital stays parked for years while the residency process runs on its own track, indifferent to how the fund is performing. Worse, the fund's terms pull against the goal they are supposed to serve: the clause that promises liquidity is the same one that warns leaving early can hurt the application. And the fee and notice period shrink that safety net to almost nothing in exactly the years an investor is most likely to want it, which in his account were years of delay in the Golden Visa process.
He did not lose money. He lost the assumption that a redemption clause meant he could leave. He chose not to redeem and asked the fund for goodwill flexibility given the delays. That request, and the case, remain unresolved.
If you hold a fund subscription agreement, read its redemption terms line by line before you rely on the word "liquid": the notice period, the fee schedule, and any wording about leaving before the application is decided. The official rules say nothing about redemption fees or notice periods, so those terms are the fund's alone; what the rules do set, such as the fund's minimum term and what it may invest in, is on our page about what the minimum investment has to buy, where the agreement itself can be read line by line against them.
Does the redemption clause in your contract cover the years your immigration case is most likely to slip?
One investor's account of a case still open, not a confirmed rule or legal advice. Check the redemption terms with the fund and Portugal's official Golden Visa guidance.
