The figure above is the minimum for Portugal's Golden Visa through investment funds. It only counts in funds that hold no property, run for at least five years and keep most of their money in Portuguese companies, and the path to citizenship from it has just grown longer.

It is the minimum investment for the fund route of Portugal's residence permit for investment, the Golden Visa, as the immigration agency AIMA states it. It is money you invest and keep as fund units, not a fee paid to the government.

The date that matters here is not the date of your investment. Since 19 May 2026, nationals of countries outside the EU and the Portuguese-speaking community need ten years of legal residence before applying for Portuguese citizenship, where it used to be five; applications already filed before that date keep the old rule. If citizenship is the reason for the investment, count the years from the new rule.

What the fund has to be

Not every fund qualifies. AIMA's page sets three conditions for the fund route:

  • The fund must not invest in real estate.
  • It must have at least five years to run when you invest.
  • At least 60% of its investments must be in companies based in Portugal.

Buying property no longer qualifies for the Golden Visa at all. The routes that remain are the fund route, starting or recapitalising a Portuguese company with jobs created, creating jobs on their own, funding scientific research, and supporting the arts or national heritage, each with its own minimum.

Staying, renewing, and the fees

The permit lasts two years and is then renewed. You must spend at least seven days in Portugal in the first year and at least fourteen days in each year after that.

AIMA charges a filing fee when you apply, an issuance fee when the permit is granted, and a fee for each renewal. Each family member who joins you pays the same issuance fee as you. Filing online costs less than filing in person.

What to ask before you invest

Before comparing an offer against anything, sort which charges are the government's, which are the fund's, and which are the adviser's.

Charges that go to the government:

  • AIMA's filing, issuance and renewal fees, for you and for each family member.

Charges that are the fund's or the adviser's own:

  • The fund's subscription, management and exit fees. These come out of your investment or its returns, and they are set by the fund, not the government.
  • A lawyer's or adviser's fee for the application. It should sit on its own line, separate from the government fees.

A few questions are worth asking directly:

  1. Does the fund meet all three conditions: no real estate, at least five years to run when you invest, and at least 60% in Portuguese companies? Ask for it in writing.
  2. When can you take your money out, and what does the fund charge to do so?
  3. Which fees are the fund's, which are the adviser's, and which are AIMA's? Ask for each on its own line.
  4. How many renewals will you pay for before the permit becomes permanent, and for how many family members?
  5. If citizenship is the goal, has the adviser counted the years under the rule in force since 19 May 2026?
