If you want a job with an Indonesian firm, or to sell your services in Indonesia, the E33G is the wrong visa: the immigration service bars work that does not match the permit and selling goods or services unless your job requires it. It is for living in Indonesia for a year while you work for a company set up abroad.

Buying this visa to find work in Bali, or to take on Indonesian customers, leaves you with a permit for something you did not plan to do. The immigration service gives its purpose as carrying out duties for a company abroad. It asks for an employment agreement with a company established outside Indonesia, and bank records showing salary or income at the yearly level shown above. Selling goods or services is forbidden unless your job requires it.

A job with an Indonesian company runs on a different visa. The service's work visa page says it needs an Indonesian sponsor, and a work permit from the Ministry of Manpower is part of it. The remote worker visa needs no sponsor at all.

What the year looks like

Use the visa within 90 days of issue. The stay permit and re-entry permit are issued at the border on admission, for one year, and you may leave and come back while the re-entry permit runs. The service says the stay can be extended online, or switched to another kind of stay permit with its own conditions. Living costs are proved with three months of bank statements, yours or a guarantor's, holding at least the smaller sum shown above.

Where the money goes

You apply through your own account on the service's e-visa site, so a firm is optional help, not a required step.

To the immigration service:

  • The four charges in the government fee shown above: entry visa, category II visa verification, one-year stay permit and one-year re-entry permit.

To a firm:

  • Its own service fee, on a line apart from those four.

Before paying an agency, ask:

  1. Is your employment agreement with a company set up outside Indonesia? If you are self-employed with clients abroad, will your contracts be accepted instead?
  2. Will anyone paying you for the work be based in Indonesia?
  3. Which quoted lines are the four government charges, and which belong to the firm?
  4. If the visa is refused, or the charges change before a decision, which part of what you paid comes back?
  5. Does the price cover the first year only, or the extension too?

A visa agency's package price or written quote for this visa is what the box above reads: answer yes to its first question, and the quote is read line by line against the published rules and the prices firms on file publish for this route. No quote in hand? Answer no and enter your yearly income. The check compares a document or a figure with the published rules, and does not look at your application or advise on it; for advice on your own case, speak to a qualified immigration lawyer.
