How much does it cost to renew a Spain non-lucrative visa?

The first price isn't the only price

A few hundred euros to a gestor, or about €27 and an afternoon?

Call them Sam. It isn't their name. Sam hadn't even applied for Spain's non-lucrative visa yet, the route for people who live on their own savings or income without working in Spain. But Sam was already thinking one step past the first application, which most people don't. This visa isn't a one-off. It has to be renewed.

So before committing, Sam asked a group of people who had been through it: what does renewing cost? Is it as expensive as the first application?

It was a good question to ask early, because the first application sets expectations. People who paid a firm to get the visa can easily assume the renewal will need the same help, at the same kind of price.

The answers said otherwise. Renewal is much easier, with less paperwork, one member wrote, and the government costs are minimal: about €20, said another. You can do it yourself, or hire a gestor (an administrative agent in Spain) for a few hundred euros. Doing it yourself, the first member added, was "a well spent €27", with one caution: wait until you're ready, in case the rules have been updated.

So the same renewal comes at two very different prices: a few hundred euros for someone else to do it, or a few tens of euros and your own time. Neither is wrong. They are the same job, done by different people, at prices many times apart.

That is worth knowing at the very start, when the first quote arrives. A quote for the first application doesn't always say what happens a year later. If it doesn't, ask: does this fee cover renewals, and if not, what will each one cost, and could you do it yourself?

Sam's question was about the renewal. The answer was really about the first quote: the price you agree at the start is rarely the only price you pay.

For Spain's non-lucrative visa, we have fees from 8 firms on file. The typical fee is about €950. The middle half sit between €762 and €4,625. Some cover the application only, some the full package.
