The UK's work-based immigration system runs on sponsorship: most routes require a licensed UK employer (or, for founders, an approved endorsing body) before an application can be made at all. The Skilled Worker and Health and Care Worker visas are the two main employer-sponsored routes, with the latter built specifically around the National Health Service and the wider care sector. The Graduate visa breaks from that pattern — it needs no sponsor, letting international graduates of UK universities stay on and work for a fixed period. The Global Talent and Innovator Founder visas serve a narrower audience: people already recognized as leaders (or emerging leaders) in their field, or founders with an endorsed, genuinely innovative business idea. Salary thresholds, skill-level requirements, and eligible occupations on the sponsored routes are reviewed periodically by the Home Office and have moved more than once in recent years.
