Portugal offers one of the broadest sets of legal residency routes covered in this guide, spanning salaried work, self-employment, remote income, study, family reunification and investment. Its golden visa programme no longer accepts property purchases; today it runs through capital placed in investment funds, business activity, job creation, scientific research or cultural donations instead. Work-based routes range from a standard employer-sponsored permit through to tracks aimed specifically at highly qualified professionals and technology-sector shortage roles. Family members of anyone already living in Portugal can apply to join them under a separate reunification route.

Did the rules change in 2026?
  • 2026-05-18Portugal rewrote its nationality law in 2026, extending the residence period required before naturalisation from 5 to 10 years for most non-EU applicants (7 years for EU and Portuguese-speaking-country nationals), and the clock now starts from the date a residence permit card is issued rather than from the date the application was filed. source
