Costa Rica offers one of the more approachable residency landscapes in Latin America, with distinct routes for remote workers, pensioners, people living on investment or rental income, and direct investors. Employment-based and family-based residency exist too, alongside a dedicated route for international students. Processing speed and paperwork vary a lot by route — some are built for a fast decision, others move slower because they route through the same national immigration office as everyone else. All routes lead toward permanent residency and, later, citizenship, provided the underlying condition (income, investment, or family tie) is maintained and properly documented at renewal.

$60,000one-time

A structured-deposit alternative to the income route; recent rule changes mean the deposit has to generate real interest rather than just being drawn down month by month.

Rentista Income
$2,500/ month, shown — not held

Passive income only — simple bank savings do not qualify under current rules, so the income source needs to be genuinely recurring.
