A digital nomad stay in Croatia lasts eighteen months at most, and a new nomad application can only be made six months after it ends, so nomad permits alone never add up to the five unbroken years that long-term residence needs. The time can count toward settling only if you move, with no gap, onto a different permit, such as one for work or for family.

Someone planning to make Croatia home can lose the time they have already lived there if the permits do not join up. The Ministry of the Interior grants long-term residence after five years of uninterrupted legal stay, and temporary stay counts; its list of stays that do not count leaves the nomad permit off. The difficulty is the length. A nomad stay is capped at eighteen months, an extension exists only when the first grant was shorter, and it adds six months at most. After that, a fresh nomad application has to wait six months, a stretch with no permit at all, so nomad permits on their own cannot be strung into five unbroken years.

The nomad months therefore help only if the next permit starts before the current one ends. If you expect to stay on, find out early which permit could follow, for a job in Croatia or to join family, and when it would have to be applied for, rather than discovering it in the last weeks.

The income test moves every year

The figure above is the monthly income asked of the main applicant: two and a half times the average monthly net salary paid in Croatia the previous year, as published by the national statistics bureau. Because it tracks last year's salaries, the amount changes every year, and a quote prepared some months ago may use a figure that is no longer current.

You can meet the test in one of three ways:

  • a bank statement showing regular income at the monthly level;
  • payslips for at least the last six months;
  • savings covering the whole stay, shown above for twelve and eighteen months.

Each family member or partner who joins you adds a tenth of the average monthly net salary to the monthly amount, as the line above shows. Separately from the money test, the permit itself is for work done through communication technology for an employer, or your own company, not registered in Croatia; serving employers in Croatia is outside it.

Your family files after you

Close family can join you through family reunification, but the ministry rejects their applications if they are lodged before your own stay is granted. An agency plan that submits everyone on the same day has the order wrong, and the family's applications are the ones that fail.

Where you apply sets the state's share

Where you apply changes what the state takes, and the range shown above as the government fee covers both places. At a police station in Croatia you pay for the grant of stay, the permit and the card. At an embassy or consulate you pay for the grant of stay and either the card, where that post issues it, or a long-term visa; the ministry says every holder must collect the card in person at a police station, so on the visa route the card is paid for there as well.

Paid to the Croatian state:

  • The grant-of-stay, permit, card or visa fees that make up the range shown above.

Paid to others:

  • If you apply for the visa through the visa centre, the ministry says the centre charges for its service on top.
  • The agency's own work: preparing and filing the application, translation of documents into Croatian or English, and any help with housing, each priced separately.

Points to settle with the agency, and with yourself:

  1. Which monthly figure is the quote built on, and is it the one in force this year?
  2. Will you prove income or savings, and do the savings cover every month of the stay you are asking for?
  3. How long a stay is being requested, and which permit, if any, could follow it without a gap?
  4. Who is joining you, and will their applications go in only after your stay is granted?
  5. Does your nationality need a visa to enter Croatia? If so, the ministry says an application lodged at a police station will be rejected; it must go through an embassy or consulate, or online.

Holding a relocation agency's or lawyer's quote for the nomad permit? Answer yes to the box's first question, and each line is set against Croatia's published requirements and the prices firms on file publish for this permit; an employment contract with your foreign employer is not something the box reads, so with only that, answer no, type your monthly income and choose Per month. The check compares a document or a figure with the published rules, and does not look at your application or advise on it; for advice on your own case, speak to a qualified immigration lawyer.
